DOOM 3 Redux

The goal of the fan-made remaster version of DOOM 3 Redux, created by modder Clear_strelok, was to refresh the visual and technical quality and improve the user experience of the original version of the game without any changes to gameplay or art style.

DOOM 3 Redux updates the game significantly, adding over 2,300 improved textures, visual effects, various bug fixes, and a GUI with improved support for widescreen monitors.

The other day Clear_strelok rolled out a huge mod update to coincide with the 20th anniversary of DOOM 3:

Hello everyone. Long time no see! It’s been a year since I talked about my progress on Redux version 2.1, and as you may have guessed, what was supposed to be an update has gotten out of hand again. I’ll go into more detail about everything that was done later, but from now on there will be no more numbered releases, and further updates will be added incrementally to the new reference version.

“20th Anniversary Edition of Redux” is the only major update to the mod since I started working on it in 2016. The game now features over 2300 improved textures, visual effects, completely redrawn graphics, hundreds of individual edits, bug fixes and UX improvements.

This version was released by the author a little earlier than expected as a “release candidate”, which means that it is fully stable, fully tested and equipped with all features, but still needs additional feedback from players before fully moving to a “stable” release. Clear_strelok will spend the next few months gathering feedback, adding to the list of changes, and explaining in more detail the specifics of what exactly will be changed or fixed in the modification. Clear_strelok has also promised to explain how he approaches the process of recreating low-resolution textures.

How to install the DOOM 3 Redux mod:

You must have the original game (such as the version from the original disk, or from Steam, or other GOG trackers).

Due to some limitations with the original executable file that may cause memory issues, it is currently highly recommended to use the universal “4gb patch” from the NTCore website – download it. Open the included patcher and select the game executable (“Doom3.exe” in the “Doom 3” game installation folder). This will prevent any accidental crashes with the 2004 version.

Next, download the archive with the modification DOOM 3 Redux: 20th Anniversary Edition from the moddb website and unpack it into the folder with the game.

All details can be found in the README file in the archive with the mod.

A brief note on what DOOM 3 is all about

DOOM 3 is a sci-fi first-person shooter with survival horror elements, developed by the legendary id Software studio and published by Activision 3. DOOM 3 was originally released for Microsoft Windows PC on August 3, 2004, adapted for Linux later that year and ported by Aspyr Media for Mac OS X in 2005. Even later, studio Vicarious Visions ported the game to Xbox, releasing it worldwide on April 4, 2005.

DOOM 3 is set on Mars in the year 2145, where a military-industrial conglomerate has established a Research and Development Center in areas such as teleportation, biological research, and advanced weapons development. Experiments with teleportation open a gateway to Hell, leading to a catastrophic demon invasion of the Mars base. The player controls a space trooper who fights back at the Center base to prevent the demons from taking Mars from the humans and reaching Earth. We recommend to be sure to check out the DOOM 3 bestiary from Space Sharks on our website.

DOOM 3 is the first reboot of the DOOM series to “ignore” the story events of the previous installments of the game (on the other hand, subsequent installments have “leveled up” this point as well – check out the timeline video of all the released installments as of 2024 in the video from The Frags). It utilizes the id Tech 4 engine. The game was a critical and commercial success, selling more than 3.5 million copies of disks, which was the most successful credit to the developers at id Software at the time. Critics praised the game’s graphics, style, and atmosphere, although reviewers were divided on how close the gameplay was to the original DOOM, focusing primarily on simple combat with a large number of enemy characters.

Resurrection of Evil, an add-on developed by Nerve Software, was released for DOOM 3 in April 2005. An official expanded (and remastered) edition called DOOM 3: BFG Edition was released in the fourth quarter of 2012 on Steam and has been ported to various platforms, including those that allow portable and virtual reality play.
